Any natural calamity can be pretty disastrous for you and your property, especially if you have plenty of trees in your yard. However, it is quite wrong not to take proper care of your trees prior to the monsoons expected during summers or winters. During these storms, we see lightning, ferocious winds and resultantly, damaged trees. The storm leaves your trees in a very bad shape and you have to spend days cleaning up the chipped pieces of wood and leaves all over the place.

There are a number of things that can happen to a tree in a storm. For instance, if your area gets heavy downpour, the trees get more vulnerable especially when the rain comes with the winds. The reason for this is because the ground gets overly saturated, causing your trees to weaken their hold. It does not apply in the case of weak trees only because the strongest trees also lose their grip when the ground is wet. It is difficult to protect your tree from tumbling over in the storm. However, there are some things you can do to prevent this from happening.

According to Federal Emergency Management Agency, “Three-fourths of the damage that trees incur during storms is predictable and preventable.” So here are the things you should know before severe weather hits your area:

* Brittle wood usually means that the tree is dying. It cannot sustain much pressure.
* If you see a lot of cracks in the branches, it means there is a risk of potential branch failure because they are bound to split sooner or later.
* If a limb is leaning excessively, it indicates weakness. Crossing branches, long horizontal limbs and multi-trunked trees demand special attention.
* Fungal growth and hollow cavities indicate decay.
* Pests can be disastrous for trees and they typically victimize the trees that are already getting weak.
* Root problems are harder to detect and have the greatest impact on the tree’s inability to survive a great storm. Weak roots are deadly because roots basically serve as the tree's anchor. If major part of the tree’s roots has been cut, you should consider getting it removed before the storm warning arrives.

While you are trying to storm proof the trees, it is important to keep the trees thin. The thicker the tree is, the more vulnerable it is to storm damage. Even for an otherwise healthy tree, storm could be dangerous so before the weathers change, you must consider hiring a professional arborist or tree care service provider to get the work done.
